Biwin CL100: The "Smaller than small" SSD is now on sale
The tiny SSD is currently only available in China, but it's coming soon…
In the vast majority of PCs, whether desktops, laptops, or "minis," the SSD has become the storage unit of choice. Its responsiveness, compactness, and lack of moving parts have made it a preferred component for replacing traditional hard drives—thread-based drives—despite a significantly higher cost per gigabyte. Initially available in 2.5-inch form factors, SSDs have become even more compact with the advent of the M.2 format, which takes up little more space than a RAM module, while capacities can reach up to 8 TB (but at what cost!).
However, this wasn't enough for some manufacturers, and in late spring 2025, the Chinese company Biwin promoted a new, even more compact form factor. Dubbed "mini-SSD," this format requires a new connector, but the product is so tiny that there's a good chance the entire industry will eventually adopt it: it would be particularly well-suited to the world of smartphones or the most compact laptops, as it's nearly the size of a standard microSD card. The first model presented by Biwin measures just 17 millimeters long, 15 mm wide, and 1.4 mm thick. It also weighs barely a gram!
The CL100 – the name of the only model currently launched by Biwin – is no slouch, however, and boasts impressive speeds of 3700 MB/s for sequential reads and 3400 MB/s for sequential writes. Performance far superior even to the best microSD cards which struggle to reach 1000 MB/s. Better still, despite the compact size of its product, Biwin is able to offer capacities from 512 GB to 2 TB and, above all, the prices are not outrageous: on the Chinese market, we are talking about 599 yuan (512 GB), 1,099 yuan (1 TB) and 2,199 yuan (2 TB), which is respectively 73 euros, 134 euros and 268 euros in direct conversion.",
