  "map_content": "Governments around the world are full of hot air, ambitious schemers, and people who treat power like a religion.\r\nThis isn't anything new.\r\nFrom ancient Rome to today, those chasing power have often preferred the spotlight over those creating value.\r\nThat said, one thing has struck me deeply over these years.\r\nWhen I delved into the backgrounds of some Chinese and other national leaders, I found that many of them didn't start out in capital offices spouting grand theories.\r\nThey'd worked in the provinces.\r\nManaged counties, cities, provinces.\r\nDealt with floods, harvests, infrastructure, budgets, factories, food supplies, and all sorts of real-world problems.\r\nThey know what farmland looks like.\r\nKnow why roads break down.\r\nKnow that behind the statistics are living, breathing people.\r\nThis matters a great deal.\r\nBecause so many people spend their lives talking about the economy without ever creating anything.\r\nTalking about agriculture without ever planting a thing.\r\nTalking about business without ever running one.\r\nTalking about labor without ever truly laboring.\r\nTheir grasp of reality comes from reports.\r\nNot from reality itself.\r\nI often joke that in my own research, I \"play farmer.\"\r\nIn fact, I do just that.\r\nI plant crops, study irrigation, calculate yields, observe the weather, manage pests.\r\nNot because I need to grow a few pumpkins to feed myself.\r\nBut because if you want to understand institutions, economics, incentives, and resource allocation, it's useful now and then to step away from books and conference rooms.\r\nThe land doesn't care about your ideology.\r\nPlants don't read your papers.\r\nThe weather won't shift because of your political stance.\r\nThe real world has a refreshing kind of honesty.\r\nIt gives no one special treatment.\r\nAnd that's precisely the teacher that so many career politicians lack most.\r\nWritten by S.
