The citizens and their king, Cecrops, decided that whichever god could provide the most valuable gift to the city would win this honor. Poseidon struck the ground with his trident and produced a salt-water spring or, in some versions, a horse, symbolizing military power and the sea. Athena, in turn, struck the rocky Acropolis with her spear and caused the first olive tree to spring forth from the earth.
