Is it imposible to activate emulators roms in social media posts, what would have to exist in the social media platform itself to some how make this work im taking modest roms from mame or aristocrat slot machine roms old ones
Thought for 25s
It's not fundamentally impossible to run emulators + ROMs directly inside social media posts (like on X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.), but it's deliberately blocked for a mix of legal, security, performance, and business reasons. Platforms choose not to support it, and even a brief experiment with this on Twitter got shut down fast. Your specific examples (modest/old MAME arcade ROMs or Aristocrat slot machine ROMs) hit extra hard barriers because most of those files are copyrighted commercial software.
Why it doesn't (and basically can't) work today
Legal / Copyright problems (the biggest blocker)
Almost all MAME ROMs and every Aristocrat slot ROM are copyrighted material owned by companies (Atari, Taito, Konami, Aristocrat, etc.). Uploading or sharing them—even old “modest” ones—is copyright infringement in most countries (including Australia, where you are).
Social media platforms are legally liable if they host or enable distribution of pirated ROMs (under laws like the US DMCA or equivalent). One takedown notice = they have to remove it, and repeated issues can get the whole platform sued.
Aristocrat slot ROMs are gambling software. Sharing them can also run into separate gambling/gaming regulations.
Result: No platform will ever green-light arbitrary ROM uploads or execution. (You can legally dump and use ROMs from hardware you personally own, but you still can’t share them publicly.)
Technical and security limits
Social media posts are heavily sandboxed HTML. They do not let you run arbitrary JavaScript or WebAssembly (the tech that browser-based emulators like jsMAME or Emularity use).
Emulators need to load binary ROM files, emulate CPU/graphics/sound, and run in real-time. That’s CPU-heavy even for old arcade/slot games.
If platforms allowed it, one viral post could lag or crash people’s feeds, or worse—malicious ROMs/emulators could be used for malware.
Platforms only allow very limited embeds (YouTube videos, images, basic polls, or their own official widgets). They strip scripts and custom code on purpose.
Platform policy and history
Twitter/X actually tried this once in 2015: you could link to Internet Archive DOS games and they would play inside tweets via player cards. It was awesome for about four days—then Twitter killed the feature because it violated their own rules against “end-to-end interactive experiences” in posts. Their developer guidelines explicitly prohibit building full games inside the player.Facebook/Instagram never supported anything like it in regular feed posts (they had separate “Instant Games” years ago, but those were pre-approved HTML5 games, not user-uploaded ROMs).
Grok (on X) and other platforms follow the same rules—no interactive code execution in posts.Theverge
What would actually have to exist in the platform itself for this to work?
For functioning emulators + ROMs to run inside posts (playable directly in your feed without leaving the app), the platform would need to build and maintain all of this:
A secure, isolated runtime/sandbox specifically for emulators (WebAssembly + limited JS) so one post can’t affect the rest of the app or your device.
ROM file upload support (or base64/data URLs) with strict size limits and scanning.
A built-in or whitelisted emulator engine (e.g., a hosted jsMAME/WebMAME fork) that the platform controls and updates.
UI controls inside the post (start/pause, coin insert, buttons, save states) that work on mobile and desktop feeds.
Performance throttling so hundreds of emulated games don’t melt phones or kill battery life in the scrollable feed.
Legal & moderation system that either:
Only allows public-domain/homebrew ROMs (almost none of the classic arcade or Aristocrat ones qualify), or
Has licensing deals with every copyright owner (completely unrealistic).
Explicit policy change allowing interactive games instead of banning them.
Even if a platform did all that, they’d still face constant DMCA complaints, legal bills, and bad PR for enabling piracy/gambling software. No major platform wants to become “the place you play illegal arcade ROMs.”
Realistic alternatives (what people actually do)
Link to external sites that do run browser emulators (Internet Archive has thousands of legal-ish arcade games you can play in-browser).
Post screenshots, short video clips of gameplay, or just talk about the games.
Use dedicated emulator apps or sites outside social media.
Bottom line: It’s not a technical impossibility—it’s a deliberate “we don’t want the legal headaches or security risks” decision. The platforms have the power to make it work, but the incentives all point the other way, especially for copyrighted commercial ROMs like the ones you mentioned.
Add to chat
30 sources
1.3s
Ask anything
Upgrade to SuperGrok
New conversation - Grok
Thankyou Sir. And thankyou for upvalueing my posts and interacting with this thread.
I don't play games. Accept for zynga poker, chess on chess . Com , wsop poker.
I have a kinhank x2 pro console which i failed to conect an arcade stick to , super cheap one, but some old arcade games requite an arcade stick to re create the arcade experience.
But did heavily test this kinhank console and it effectively reprodeced marvel vs capcom 1 and 2. This is just a plug and play console woth over 50,000 games on it for 80 bux running android emulec which is a linux/android emulator setup. That you just plug into tv with hdmi cord. I may be incorrect with the exact specs, just from memory, with an sd card with the roms, and grok says is copyable.
To my knowledge this is the single biggest thing in gaming that i have come accross as a machine/ computer the size of a packet of cigarrettes is litetaly an historic archive a museum piece with the bulk or lets say a good start to preserving these video games.
So my origional entry into this arcade video gaming online on social media dabbling at best was before the atari vcs came out and was pushing for it to run on BSV.
But this prominent gamer got to them first and the idiot got them to use etherium.
I consider it a betrayal of the highest order, effectively destroying the project i was pushing. It was clear as day, no if buts or maybes he single handedly denied BSV of entering into the gaming market in the big leagues partnering with atari when BSV was new, he wasnt alone im sure but am certain it was him.
Anyway im just continueing a very lack lustre
attempt to post a few things to show you can actually have one click gaming activation on social media posts.
Around this time im sure google stadia i think it was called was coming out and think it was a flop for some reason.
Now because of my deplatforming from twitter im trying to re create some of the stuff i was posting on twitter and facebook.
More to spark a bit of interest and to show
One click social media post activation ( you then have to do a few more clicks to fully activate the game ) but one click gets you into a gaming environment of sorts, this is nothing new or over the top, but this is for people that have no idea of interntet archive on site arcade video games.
And at the least this post may brighten someones day that isnt aware of such things.
And i did really enjoy the google garden gnome game when it came out .
And played olit a lot even though i hate google with a passion i still use it.
They actually have some very interesting games on the google doodle archive.
So yeah since i only have a phone im not keen on playing anything accept chess and poker on here.
And trying my darnest to not open anymore accounts online with anything accept possibly metanet. Until i get a computer. And ideally would like to be doing a nine to five
And using a laptop and destop to stuff around which is basically what im doing , i would hardly call what im doing even borderline development.
So i tried going on ordinals but it said sign inwhich is not something im that keen on.
But i do support the ordinals, even though i havent reasearched it much.
I am interested in the metanet and treechat and gorilla pool mainly.
So i hope im not spamming treechat with this stuff that im doing or being anmoying too much. I try to stay off main feed ( hate that word feed ) main thread and stick to this stream but some things like Craig Wright substacks, Gavin Mehl youtubes, metanet meetups i consider a moral obligation to post on main thread.
So my focus if i get around to it is phsically building arcade gaming cabinets with this new emulator console the emulec but seeing if i can turn a profit aquireing bulk cheep pcs like these cheap refurbished dells.and selling them on black market ,
So sorry for not participating more in stuff like ordinals, but my situation here in canberra is pretty bleak mate, but dont want to whinge and elaborate, but please take my word for it. So yeah ideally a 9 to five , shelter, and my dog happy, and a desktop so i can actually do some serious work like development.
But until then i hope you dont mind me at the minimum a post a day, but sometimes i feel the urge to make a mega thread like this one.
Hey its at the risk of cringing some people out but they can mute, i guess ive gotten carried away with this treechat Radio thing but hey no ones said anything to me in this thread about pissing the fuck off from treechat.
So hopefully ill find a balance to at least provide some daily content of sorts with a heavy emphasis on the sorts.
Theres only so much i can do without any advice or talking to anyone",
