It was both a care center and a spiritual home for the local Pur\u00e9pecha people. The Templo del Sagrario, seen here, was part of that vision. A mix of faith, compassion, and early colonial art that still stands today.\r\n\r\nHow do we know he was sincere? Fair question given the colonial invasion of that land. I'm not sure but ..\r\n\r\nHere\u2019s what we know that helps judge his sincerity:\r\n\r\nHis actions matched his words.Unlike many colonial officials, Vasco de Quiroga lived simply, gave away much of his salary, and personally helped set up hospitals, schools, and communities for Indigenous people. He didn\u2019t just order others to do it -- he worked beside them.\r\nHe opposed exploitation.He wrote strong letters condemning the mistreatment of Indigenous people and tried to shield them from forced labor. This put him at odds with other Spanish leaders and settlers who wanted control over the local workforce.\r\nHis projects lasted.The towns he organized, called hospital-pueblos, continued long after he died. They became models of education, craftwork, and community self-support, which suggests his ideas weren\u2019t just for show.\r\nLocal memory.The Pur\u00e9pecha people still honor him as Tata Vasco (\u201cFather Vasco\u201d), not because Spain told them to, but because his kindness and fairness became part of local tradition.\r\nSo while he was still a man of his time -- a Spanish bishop in a colonial system -- most historians agree he was genuinely driven by compassion and a belief in justice.",
