You're correct about the pinout: input voltage (12V in your case) goes to the left pin, ground to the middle, and the regulated 5V output comes from the right pin.  The 7805 can indeed handle up to 35V input, but using 12V is perfectly fine.  And yes, it can supply up to 1.5A, although it's best to add a heatsink if you're getting close to that maximum current draw to keep the regulator cool.",
