In theory, his claim should be easy to prove, by simply supplying a message verifying the claim using the original Satoshi Nakamoto [GPG](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Privacy_Guard \"GNU Privacy Guard\") private key;[[41]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-41)[[42]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-42) however, he is either unable or unwilling to provide this. On Thursday, 5 May 2016, shortly before closing his blog, Wright sent around an email link to a news story site saying: \"Craig Wright faces criminal charges and serious jail time in UK\". Wright stated, \"I am the source of terrorist funds as bitcoin creator or I am a fraud to the world. At least a fraud is able to see his family. There is nothing I can do.\"[[43]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-ohagan-43) The article Wright mentioned to O'Hagan has since been retracted.[[44]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-fusion-44)\n\nIn June 2016, the _[London Review of Books](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London\\_Review\\_of\\_Books \"London Review of Books\")_ published an article by [Andrew O'Hagan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_O%27Hagan \"Andrew O'Hagan\") about the events, later included in his book _The Secret Life: Three True Stories_, in which O'Hagan spends several weeks with Wright at the request of Wright's public relations team; which, as revealed in the book, was set up as a result of a business deal between Wright and various individuals including [Calvin Ayre](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_Ayre \"Calvin Ayre\"). O'Hagan was with Wright during the time of his various media interviews. O'Hagan also interviews Wright's wife, colleagues and many of the other people involved in his claims.[[43]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-ohagan-43)[[44]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-fusion-44)[[45]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-45)\n\nWright told _[Finder](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finder\\_(website) \"Finder (website)\")_ in 2019 that bitcoin's creation was a group effort, that he drove the project, and that [Dave Kleiman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Kleiman \"Dave Kleiman\") and [Hal Finney](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_Finney_(computer_scientist) \"Hal Finney (computer scientist)\") were involved.[[46]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-46)\n\nWright [registered US copyright](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_registration \"Copyright registration\") in the bitcoin white paper and the code for bitcoin 0.1 in April 2019.[[47]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-47) A spokesman for Wright told the _[Financial Times](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial\\_Times \"Financial Times\")_ that this was \"the first government agency recognition of Craig Wright as Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin\";[[48]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-48) the [United States Copyright Office](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Copyright_Office \"United States Copyright Office\") issued a press release clarifying that this was not the case, and that \"the Copyright Office does not investigate whether there is a provable connection between the claimant and the pseudonymous author.\"[[49]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-49)\n\nIn order to resolve Wright's claim of being Satoshi Nakamoto, the [Crypto Open Patent Alliance](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Crypto_Open_Patent_Alliance&action=edit&redlink=1 \"Crypto Open Patent Alliance (page does not exist)\") (COPA) sued Wright in the [High Court](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Court_of_Justice \"High Court of Justice\") in London, and hearings were heard in February and March 2024.[[50]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-50) On 14 March, after a five-week trial Mr Justice Mellor ruled that Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto.[[51]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-51) The written judgment released on 20 May stated that documents submitted as evidence to substantiate Wright's claim to be Satoshi were forgeries, and Dr Wright had \"lied to the court extensively and repeatedly\".[[52]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-52) Later that year, in December, Wright was found in contempt of court and received a suspended prison sentence for violating a court order related to his assertions about Bitcoin's creation.[[53]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-53)\n\n### Legal issues\n\n#### Dave Kleiman estate\n\nIn February 2018, the estate of [Dave Kleiman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Kleiman \"Dave Kleiman\") initiated a lawsuit in the [U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._District_Court_for_the_Southern_District_of_Florida \"U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida\") against Wright over the rights to [US$](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US$ \"US$\")5 billion of bitcoin, claiming that Wright defrauded Kleiman of Bitcoins and intellectual property rights.[[54]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-54)[[55]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-55)[[56]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-56)\n\nIn August 2019, Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart, ruling on a motion to force Wright to list his early bitcoin holdings, ordered that, for the purposes of this case, the Kleiman estate owned half the bitcoin holdings that Wright mined in partnership with Kleiman from 2009 to 2013, as Wright's \"non-compliance with the court's orders is willful and in bad faith.\" Wright was also ordered to transfer half of the partnership's intellectual property as well as pay Kleiman's reasonable attorney fees in bringing the motion. Reinhart said that the court was not required to decide, and would not decide, whether Wright was Satoshi Nakamoto, and was not required to decide and did not decide how much bitcoin Wright controlled.[[57]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-57)\n\nReinhart said that \"Dr. Wright's demeanor did not impress me as someone who was telling the truth\" and that he rejected Wright's testimony in the motion: \"Dr. Wright\u2019s story not only was not supported by other evidence in the record, it defies common sense and real-life experience.\"[[58]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-58)\n\nFollowing a three-week trial in late 2021, a jury found Wright liable for [conversion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conversion_(law) \"Conversion (law)\") but awarded Kleiman's estate US$100 million in damages while Kleiman's estate had sought upwards of US$25 billion at trial. Wright took the position that verdict served as a vindication of his role in inventing bitcoin and stated that he would not appeal the jury's findings.[[59]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-59)[[60]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-60)\n\n#### Defamation cases\n\nIn May 2019, Wright started using [English libel law](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_defamation_law \"English defamation law\") to sue people who accused him of lying about being the inventor of bitcoin, and who called him a fraud.[[9]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-times20190507-9) Wright also served legal notices to [Vitalik Buterin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitalik_Buterin \"Vitalik Buterin\"), the founder of the cryptocurrency [Ethereum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethereum \"Ethereum\"), who called Wright a fraud; [Roger Ver](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Ver \"Roger Ver\"), an early bitcoin entrepreneur and advocate; and Peter McCormack, a podcaster.[[61]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-61) Wright ended up dropping his lawsuit against Buterin by letting it expire.[_[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation\\_needed \"Wikipedia:Citation needed\")_]\n\nIn the case against McCormack, the [High Court](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen%27s_Bench_Division \"Queen's Bench Division\") judge was not asked to decide whether Wright is Satoshi, as by the time of the trial McCormack was not defending his statements on the basis that they were true, but as the judge found Wright \"not to be a witness of truth\" who had \"advanced a deliberately false case and put forward deliberately false evidence until days before trial\" he awarded him only \u00a31 in damages.[[62]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-62)\n\nIn June 2019, Wright filed a libel lawsuit in the UK against a Norwegian bitcoin user, Marcus Granath, known on social media as \"Hodlonaut\".[[63]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-63) Granath, who has stated that Wright is not Nakamoto, then filed a lawsuit against Wright in Norway in order to provide legal corroboration for his assertions; in October 2022, the Norwegian court decided in Granath's favor.[[64]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-64)\n\nIn response to Wright's actions preceding the Hodlonaut lawsuit, [Changpeng Zhao](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changpeng_Zhao \"Changpeng Zhao\"), founder of crypto exchange [Binance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binance \"Binance\"), called Wright out as a fraud.[[65]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-65)[[66]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_note-66)\n\nReferences\n----------\n\n1. **[^](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Steven_Wright#cite_ref-1)**[\"Denariuz Ltd 08260048 company information\"](http://companydb.uk/08260048-denariuz-ltd).
